Episode 8: The hounds of God - medieval heretics and inquisitors

This Week In Free Speech with Jacob Mchangama

CHAPTER

Why Did Popes Establish Inquisitions?

The mediaeval inquisition was an oppressive system of thought control. To the church, it was an attempt not to punish, but to heal, cure and prevent. The word religion comes from the latin ligera, meaning to tie or to bind. In other words, individual and society were bound together by christianity. Untie those sacred bonds and everything would come apart. So the spread of heresy did not just condemn the individuals infected by this ease to eternal damnation. It corrupted christian society as such, ultimately risking the wrath of god himself.
