Why Did Popes Establish Inquisitions?

The mediaeval inquisition was an oppressive system of thought control. To the church, it was an attempt not to punish, but to heal, cure and prevent. The word religion comes from the latin ligera, meaning to tie or to bind. In other words, individual and society were bound together by christianity.
