George was frustrated with hollywood and tired of dealing with studio executives. George pitched an 18 page outline of the movie around town, but no one wanted it. Studio after studio passed believing the guy who made t h x 11 38 was box office poison. United artists killed the project. American graffiti was dead at united artists. But george still retained the rights to the script,. which meant he could make it on his own. George broke, so he made a painful decision that went against his very nature.
