Men in particular have historically banded together in brotherhoods or fraternal organizations from the Latin word frater, which means brother. Meetings would often involve drinking and carousing; often they'd pursue some charitable goal too. In the 19th century, it became a fad to make these fraternal organizations secret, adding an element of secrecy and mystery to them.
