If it's a hot day and you're sweating a lot, you need to consume more water. A quart might be enough to cover you for two, three, four hours of bouldering. An empty stomach could be the best way to go and send that hard boulder. I'm not a big fan of gels for climbing except in big walls and mountaineering.
