The income gets taxed oftentimes at the lower qualified dividends rate, which is 0%, if you're in the 10% or 15% bracket. Another great advantage is that you can get tax efficient investments pretty darn easily out of mutual fund company like Vanguard. You can even buy investments that don't pay any dividend at all, such as Warren Buffett's company Berkshire Hathaway.
