History of Ideas: Hume

Past Present Future

CHAPTER

Why Do You Think That This Thing Is Not Okay?

The essay of suicide is in the Martian genre that says, why do you think this thing is somehow so much worse than everything else? In part because we are living in an age where arguments about public debt are central to our politics. What Hume is writing about in this essay is what American politicians have been arguing about for the past couple of months or years. Those arguments have been heard in the US Congress in the last few weeks before I recorded this podcast and they were the arguments that animated Hume nearly 300 years ago. They're not the same arguments but there is a family resemblance.
