Gordon: The atmosphere in which we lived became poisoned by selfishness, hate, and fear. If a prisoner appeared to be lagging, a Japanese guard would beat him, bayonet him, or just decapitate him in full view of all the other prisoners. Existence had become so miserable, the odds so heavy against survival, that for most of us, nothing mattered except to just survive. And it wasn't just David, even Mephibosheth also experienced the power of sacrificial love to transform hearts that are easily prone to seek revenge when wrong.
