Do You Think the Federal Government Is a Good Idea?
The articles of confederation did not create a nation called the united states of america. They created an alliance of 13 independent and sovereign states who had agreed to be cool with each other. Congress couldn't raise money to carry out these tasks by taxing the states, it could neither raise troops in order to defend the country or wage war against aggressors. It didn't even require or compel other states to comply with any of the laws that it passed. As a body puts it, you are officially the group that drives the car, but you cannot ask us for gas.
