The Iron Lung

The etymology of poliomyelitis is from the Greek polio, meaning gray and muellos, I guess. And so it refers to the inflammation in the gray matter of the spinal cord which causes paralysis. Of these paralytic cases, about 5 to 10% of them are fatal because the paralysis affects the diaphragm or intercostal muscles that are responsible for respiration.
