Leaking Some Oil Just the Understatement of the Year
By 12 35 a m 30 minutes after impact, 100 thousand gallons of oil have poured into the clear, blue water. Oil spews in geysers from rupture tanks standing seven stories high and roars to the surface around the disembowelled ship. The air is already thick with blue vapor and eye searing nostrils singing fumes. With every minute, the tragedy gets worse - but there's nothing hazelwood and his crew can do except watch and wait for help to arrive. Almost three hours later, the first coast guard vessel approaches the valdes. By this point, over four million gallons ofOil have dumped into the pristine, emerald water of the sound.
