The Equinox and the Solstice
The equinox occurs when the earth reaches two transition points in its movement around the sun. The solstice also occurs twice a year and is basically the opposite of an equinox. An ancient people could very easily measure the beginning of summer and winter by keeping track of the sun's trajectory. When it reached its height, it was summer; when it reached its lowest it was winter.
