The casual buttress is a metaphor for the relationship between, i suppose, purity and context. It speaks about things which are open and garrulous and not scared of inflection. The type of the cottage isn't broken the buttress. In fact, the brittle type drawings of the cottage meant that so called vernacular architecture became unusable because it made a building.
