The Berlin Airlift

After the Second World War, Germany was divided into four separate zones. The German capital of Berlin was treated as a separate issue from the rest of the country. In 1948, the Soviets instituted a blockade of West Berlin to try and break up the Allied-controlled city. However, it remained under the control of the Allied powers until 1990. For all practical purposes, West Berlin was a de facto part of West Germany but on paper it was not.
