The Death of the Friendly Society
Friendly societies inculcated self-respect, independence and superevisory capacities. They were run for by and administered by those who were members of the society. Unlike state which everybody requires, they can take whatever they can from without compunction. And so, of course, the friendly societies declined and died on the vine. In Ireland, if you take the major categories of public spending, health, education, and welfare account for over 50% of government expenditure.
