The Importance of a Christian's Conversion
Augustine: Salvation for me is to belong to Christ and to each other. And so if you want to belong to this new family, how do you enter a family? You have to do it by birth. To think of a kind of personal conversion apart from the church doesn't really make any sense. We can call God my father but never something purely private. It's always in the context of a share in Jesus's sonship,. One that by its nature is shared with others.
