When I was in high school, the universe was 20 billion years old. We think the earliest little stars formed maybe half a billion years after the Big Bang. The sun has a lifetime of 10 billion years; any star that is even less massive will have an even longer lifetime. That gives us a chance to observe some of the stars that form back then.
