Julian Zelizer and Francis Chen conducted an experiment based on what scientists know about the bond between parents and children. People who were asked to make direct eye contact with somebody that they disagreed with actually ended up disagreeing even more than those who looked at the mouth or sort of let their gaze wander. So that was weird and it was exactly the opposite of what we had projected.
