The 16th Michigan was attacked by the 4th and 5th Texas at Gettysburg in 1863. The commander ordered his troops to hold their front line while they fought off a possible attack from behind. He then took up position on a rock which gave him an advantage over other soldiers who were trying to get between two round tops for cover. This is where he would later be killed, during one of the battle's most memorable moments.
