In 1985, you only needed 1.21 gigawatts to power up the DeLorean time machine that would take you back in time. Now for contrast, your house is probably at no point in the day uses more than 20 kilowatts. You're most likely using somewhere around 5, 5 kilowatts, maybe even less. It's a million watts for a megawatt, it's a billion watts for a gigawatt. That's a lot of energy.
