The Problem of Software Portability

In the old days of assembly language, that would break your code. Well, not in C, you just change the compiler not to use that instruction and then boom, this new twice as fast computer had one instruction removed. And so it permitted innovations to happen. Moore's law has led to the doubling every few years and all that stuff. The most recent thing we see of this is how Apple switched from PowerPC to an ARM based M1 processor.
