The word Lord in Greek is kureos, which means Lord and it can have a range of meanings. It's hard to know what exactly the centurion understood at this point, but clearly he knows enough about Jesus to recognize enough about him. And then in verse 10, we get Jesus's reaction whenJesus heard it, he marveled and said unto them that followed, verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith. No, not in Israel."
