The Selfish Gene

I was raised agnostic slash atheist. And now I certainly do describe myself as an atheist. I feel that everything about religion can be explained as a human construction. The idea that something is genuinely nice, genuinely altruistic, why can't that be a product of evolution? So I think the selfish gene concept was something that offended my sensibilities. It should be possible to explain niceness at face value without calling it selfish.
