Mutual funds give small investors an opportunity to participate in a professionally managed fund. And that's kind of the advantage. You can basically turn your money over to somebody and at least you can hope that they'll beat the market. That means buying stocks on the bet that they will go up. Not that they will going down which is shorting them.
