The History of Knosos
The Bronze Age palace at Knosos was destroyed several times by earthquakes but each time they build it back often better and more elaborate than before. It could be that the people who lived around Knosos were fed up of being taxed by the palace and so burned the palace down themselves. The Mycenaeans came to occupy Crete in Knosos, which may have had some sort of effect on its relations with the population. But I quite like the idea that there was some sort of internal revolt because after all once the palace is destroyed people go back to the hillside.
