CHAPTER

The Consensus of the Church in the Age of Mass Criminalization

Every 28 hours a black person is killed by law enforcement, security personnel or vigilantes in this country with their killers rarely getting charged or convicted. The church has moved along in such a way to provide moral, theological, political, cultural and social cover to all of these numbers that undergird one of the greatest human rights evils of our generation. How is it that we who claim to follow and worship the one who came to set the captives free be so comfortable with captivity? Going upstream then is not just an act of liberation for those who find themselves in cages and prisons, but bleeding out on cold, hard, concrete streets.
