The History of the Squire
We tend to think of Squires as teenage boys, knights in training. Historically, there were many men who spent their entire lives as Squires and never became Knights. It was quite common to have 30 40 year old Squires, even some in their 50s. Such men perhaps do not have the wealth to become Knights. In a modern army, what happens is an 18 year old will say two different 18 year olds. One joins the army, private, and they get trained with radios and humbies and M 16s; after four years, there are sergeant. Another 18 year-old goes to college and spends four years studying history and management and then gets commissioned as a lieutenant.
