Projective Identification: A Basic Defense Mechanism

Projective identification is a way of putting something from you or from point A onto point B. It would be incorrect to see projective identification as just or as narrowly, at least initially, putting a self identification onto another person. That's not quite the way to look at it. The idea that this yourself experiences, your self awareness, and your experiences of other people are characterized by certain permeability. Or accessing that permeability in a way that has a contagious aspect yet? So given the example of child whining, we can actually think about projective ID as a way for someone to communicate their experience to you through psychic distress.
