The Origins of the Word Cocktail

Cocktail was first mentioned in 1803 in a New Hampshire newspaper called the Farmers Cabinet. It goes, drank a glass of cocktail, excellent for the head - all that the doctors drank another glass of cocktail. There are many theories as to its origins but we still don't know where it came from. In this episode Susie Dent introduces us to new words and Noel Coward's famous Poor Little Rich Girl song has a line about cocktails and laughter.
