The Soviets and the Korean Airlines Shoot Down
We nearly got into a shooting war with the Soviets within you know 40 less than 48 hours after the Korean airline shoot down where we had a near confrontation between me 23s and F-15s. That situation was diffused really by the commander of US forces Japan himself who made sure that once the EP3 was safe that we were going to let the make 23s return to their base safely but as I described in the book it was a really near run thing. We came within seconds of having a dog fight between F- 15s and make 23s which the make 23S would have lost so it was cool head-in-ness on the part of the real commander at that time
