Marilyn: I don't think we can actually have a clear understanding of who would choose to be an atheist. Many people simply call themselves that because they lack instruction, which has been the old project of Christianity since Saint Paul and so on. We put religion out of sight out of respect for diversity of religion, but that slides over into the idea of religion as being assertive in an inappropriate way or something if it's allowed. And that makes people sort of illiterate from as far as religious thought is concerned.
