The Importance of Perspective in Old English
Valerie Friedland: I think a lot of people are indirect. In fact, our culture is indirect. And maybe it's anxious and maybe one of the reasons that the younger generation is anxious is because they've been inculcated in this idea that to give offense is a horrible thing. But my personal experience with students is not that they're anxious in general more than we were before in different eras. What I do know is they are paranoid about their speech as so many adults have told them they are meaningless in their speech.
