The Importance of Public Speaking in Academic Writing
I don't think I realized until I left Chicago and then got to Fletcher, the extent to which I was perhaps suffering from battered wife syndrome by being at Chicago. My public writings were not looked on with enthusiasm by some in the department. Now if you have a public voice, so long as you're also productive in terms of scholarship, that public voice helps you it doesn't hurt you in fact if anything. A lot of academic department served obsessed with impact and things like that. That was not necessarily true back in the day.
