After this mammoth operation had been completed, the team began ising the cause. They were able to work out the age of the different layers of sediment. Then they started piecing together a chronology of ice ages in this region.

However, in the tropics long-term records like these have been absent. Now researchers have uncovered a sediment core in Peru which reveals around 700,000 years of climatic history.
