First thing I think about in a disaster response is what do the people who never asked to be their need? And that's my first job before I get to thinking about the longer term. When a disaster happens, one of your biggest enemies is the startle factor. People flee the scene and we lose track of whether they need any support from agencies. So how we respond changes but there are always a key compassion, I think, that travels. In many ways, all of us are now living through a global pandemic because we've all lived through a disaster. We have different degrees of impact on our lives - some more pessimistic than others. Yet you still have the optimism for the future
