In America for many people, the answer is neither. You are however hard you work. I became very interested in this concept of workism through a pretty interesting and esoteric piece of time use data. And my answer to it was perhaps it's because work for them is an asset. It is the centerpiece of their life. And that's why the richest people are choosing to spend more time to buy work. That touches very directly on America's character. This country has for hundreds of years been enmeshed in something like the Protestant work ethic in a way that other countries have not.
