Kiev and Ukrainian officials have been talking about a counter-offensive for a long time. This week on Monday, the army said they were launching an offensive against Karsan. It would be Ukraine's first serious counter-offensive since the war began. There is definitely something afoot, and it's a major move," says John Defterios.

Russia has halted the flow of gas through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Europe for three days, and the EU has agreed to suspend a visa deal with Moscow. Plus the FT’s John Paul Rathbone explains why Ukraine’s counter-offensive in the south of the country could be a gamechanger in the war.
