After 19 17, a literacy test is added to the examination process. This will get one to two thousand imigrants sent back every year. Ellis island soon becomes a ghost town. During world war too, it serves as a detention center for many prisoners. It resumes its pre war duties when peace comes. But in 19 54, ellis island closes its doors, never to re-open again.
