San Francisco and Sacramento Hit New October Rainfall Records
The storm that brought the atmospheric river to the west coast was the most intense on record offshore the Pacific Northwest. There were hurricane force winds in the open ocean, and then as it hit the coast, there were 50 to 80 mile per hour gusts along the whole coast from Seattle to San Francisco. It's so rare for California to get that much rain, especially at once. And you talk about 200 days without rain and then all of a sudden dumping all that moisture. The likelihood of one of these storms is actually quite high.
