Slavery had virtually died out in europe, but forced labor was common. The indentured servant signed a contract of indenture in england or in america. Illegitimate children and the poor were routinely bound out until they were 21. Colonial adults were also bound out to pay debts or satisfy legal requirements. This system did not spring full blown from the heads of the original settlers. It evolved piece by piece, act by act, within the context of the colonial sindrom as belaga has shown.
