Roman marriage was about cementing connections between families, securing and consolidating property. The very idea of romantic love was so divorced from the concept of marriage that those who stumbled into a union found themselves the butts of jokes rather than celebrated as models to be emulated. Roman women were eligible for marriage at 12 and Roman men or should I say Roman punk teenagers were ready at 14.
