Google was looking to invest in start-ups when it set up a venture fund. The idea for the fund came from Eric Sirgey, who is now Google's COO. Sirgey: "It wasn't likeke a big idea, like, let's put a billion dollars aside" He says investments would not be strategic or tied to any strategic initiative at company.

With $3.0 billion under management and investments in Uber and Nest, GV was described as one of the hottest venture funds in Silicon Valley under his leadership. Maris oversaw the growth of the team from 1 to 70+, across 7 offices, 2 continents, and 400 investments.
