The purpose of the course explicitly and almost in the way it was created, in the way most departments teach it, is covered. It's designed to cover a lot of different areas of english literature. So what really matters here? It's not just in students with these 30 authors. That can't be the reason why we're doing this. The reason has to be more about our expectations of developing certain kinds of skill for how they interpret literature.
