Lee shelton was an african american man born in texas in 18 65. By the 18 nineties, he had migrated to missouri and set himself up in the booming town of saint louis. The city was deeply segregated, with 85 % of the city's sizable black population being forced to live on just two percent of the total area. But despite these harmful racist policies, black saint louis still managed to flourish culturally. Ragtime music, a sound which would come to define the era, was born in saint louis's black community.
