The Charge of the Light Brigade was based on a famously disastrous battle between British and Russian forces. Nearly 17,000 Americans had been killed in Vietnam in 1968 alone. "No one has to be told, this is a metaphor of the war we're sitting in the midst of," Snep says. In 1970, right around the time Nixon was binging on Patton, a very different version of the US military was hitting theaters.
