De Bois, historian and civil rights leader, understood Klansman best. We hurt others because we are afraid and are in pain. I am scared, so I'm going to shoot a gun at someone who doesn't look like me. So, like... Who am I if I don't have someone to hate? Maybe it's their fault, everything about that. It's their fault for not looking like me.
