If you're just getting your folate from things like leafy greens and natural foods rather than supplements, you're only absorbing about 50 % of that. The c d c calculates this as preventing about 13 hundred cases of neural tube defects every year. And since the introduction of folate fortification programmes in the us, and canada, those numbers are a decrease of between 30 to 50% from what they were before fortification began. That's a really big drop. It's also incredibly cost effective for people who are into that as a reason for public health measures.
