The Life and Times of John Kale
While at Goldsmith's Kale became friendly with Cornelius Cardu, a composer and chalice who had studied with Stockhausen. In July 1963 he presented a festival there consisting of an afternoon and evening show. These shows included the first British performances of several works including Cage's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. The final piece in the show was a performance by Kale, the first one in Britain, of Lamont Young's X for Henry Flint. For this piece, Kale put his hands together and then smashed both his arms onto the keyboard as hard as he could, over and over. After five minutes some of the audience stormed the stage and tried to drag the piano
