Thomas Sol: People navigate based on proxies for well-being. And unfortunately, those proxies are especially easily sidelined by chemicals that interfere with the motivational architecture. Sol: It's not surprising that if you take the pain out of losing your home and you facilitate the pursuit of those chemicals lots of people will fail to find the motivation to fix their lives. He says suppressing facts is one of the most successful filtering operations imaginable. The Holocaust would have been filtered completely out of history instead of being merely ignored as it usually is today.
