A nation needs to position itself such that, in theory at least, it could continue to exist if every other person in the world ceased to exist. The very first scionists who showed up in the late nineteenth century tried to establish a plantation system in which jews would live a comfortable life on the back of cheap native labor. This was something that the second generation of zionist, after the plantation generation, and especially the labor zionists, were really concerned about. And they never wanted to allow the jewish communities in the world to be in that position again.
