The Collaborative Dimension of Human Self-Understanding
I really liked this phrase that you used in this piece that human self-understanding is a collaborative project and not a race between departments. I want people to be to to feel that sense of cooperation and pulling together which is weirdly hard at universities. The turf wars between disciplines are getting really fierce but with things moving so fast we're going to need to justfeel like we're all in this together it's a big confusing rapidly evolving project with risks, he says.

Ted is a professor in the School of Information Sciences with an appointment in the Department of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Trained in English literary history, he turned his research focus to applying machine learning to large digital collections. His work explores literary patterns that become visible across long timelines when we consider many works at once—often, his work involves correcting and enriching digital collections to make them more amenable to interesting literary research.
